A History of how we destroyed our soil.

I have just begun to read the book Secrets of The Soil, by Peter Tompkins. The introduction to the book is a fascinating tale of why the world began using chemical fertilizers in the 1800’s, why we continue to use them, and explains the damaging effects of chemical fertilizers to the soil first, then to our food supply, and then the parallel to an increase in human diseases.  When we skip the natural process—of decomposing organic material into the humus that feeds our plants everything they need,—plants become watery and susceptible to pests which in turn caused a need for pesticides.  You can find the book on amazon.com I cut the introduction pages out of my book so you all can read this historical account of the science and politics that got us to where we are today.
